My grandmother, Estelle, has always loved flowers. Her favorite color has always been red. I have to admit that when I first conceived of Estelle, I didn’t have my grandmother in mind – but once all the pieces of the design came together for me, I knew that Estelle was the perfect name.
Estelle, or as I sometimes like to call her – flower yoke cardi, is a top-down round-yoke cardigan. The sweater is knit in an aran weight yarn, so the knitting goes very fast. A large lace flower motif around the yoke and the slightly bloused sleeves make this a feminine cardigan with a little bit of whimsy.
The neck of the sweater is wide, and you increase almost immediately to the stitches for the flower motif. Once you’re past the yoke, the knitting of the body and sleeves is quite simple – just a little bit of waist shaping and some decreases at the sleeve cuffs.
The gauge for the pattern is 17 sts/ 4 inches in Stockinette stitch. Although the pattern is written at an aran gauge, I think that it would also look nice in a smaller gauge with more repeats of the petals. The flower motif instructions are charted as well as written out line-by-line.
The pattern is available for 6.50 (USD) as a download in my Ravlery Store or through Paypal. Just click below! And if you do decide to knit Estelle, I always appreciate feedback!

This is just gorgeous!!! I am so intimidated by grown up sweaters, but this one is so inspiring. Ah, and the color you knit it in is absolutely stunning!
I’ll put it in my queue for motivation to be brave :)

Hi, I’ve noticed that a number of knitters in Ravelry had sizing issues: neck and yoke too big, body too small. Have you made modifications to address these problems?
Thanks,
Merrill

Hi Merrill! So, when I first released the pattern I noticed some fit issues and made a few changes then, but I have not updated the pattern since then (January 2010). I have noticed some people not liking how wide the neckline is, but it’s designed to be almost a boat-neck, so I’m not sure if these issues are with fit or just not liking the design of the pattern . . . I guess long story short is no, I’ve not made any changes to the pattern (except at the very beginning). I have noticed some people knitting the top a size smaller than the body they want to get a more fitted neckline. Hope this helps!

I bought this pattern and I am excited to see the finished project! I am a bit confused and I am hoping you can help me out. In the section “Begin Lace Pattern” I am confused by the part in the [ ]. When am I supposed to do that? Where do I add the extra stitch and do I do it in every row? Sorry to ask, I am just a bit lost!

Hi,
Thanks so much for getting back to me about the pattern. I figured out where I was going wrong and was able to fix it. Sorry it took me so long to reply. I have passed the dreaded lace work stage and the sweater is looking great. Thanks again and I hope you enjoyed your vacation!

I stumbled upon this pattern while browsing Ravelry, and thought this was it for my next project and immediately purchased it! I’ve never done a top down one piece knitting. Looking forward to the new project! Thank you for the lovely design!

Hi, I have a question about the pattern. I’ve just divided sleeves and knitted several rows below the armhole. The pattern here is saying “Continue to work body in St st, keeping the first and last 5 sts in garter stitch, until body measures 4 inches.” When do you say ‘body’, are you referring the area below the lace pattern ends? from the end of the armholes? From where do I measure 4 inches? I’m a little confused….

Hi! I think maybe the confusion is about the “work 1 additional stitch” part? Maybe the wording is a little bit weird – all I mean by that is that there is 1 stitch that you have to work that is outside of the pattern repeat (this is outside of the pink outline in the lace chart). So, you will knit 1 stitch, then work the lace repeat the number of times for your size. Does that make sense? Yes, the WS or “wrong side” means the purl side for this sweater. I hope this helps!

Could you please tell me what sizes this pattern is for? I am looking for a sweater pattern like this for my 7 year old granddaughter, but it looks like this is for an adult as opposed to a child. Is there a child’s version available.?

I am confused…. I am making the large size and after the neck it says I am suppose to have 171 stitches on the pattern. I do have that many but the next row is starting the lace pattern and to do ,or, finish that row you need to have 179 stitches. I have counted and counted both my stitches and the row count and the row count always comes out to have more stitches. Please help as I really wanted to make this pattern. Plus could you explain this a little more
[work 1 additional stitch; pattern repeat 6 (7,8, 8, 9, 9, 9) times, work 16 additional sts]
Work rows 1-29 of flower motif
Work 1 WS row
So after every 9 repeats of each and every row I do 1 increase 1 st? There is 29 rows of the lace pattern so how do I get 16 additional sts ???
I am very disappointed at this point as I could be knitting and not writing waiting for additional information.

I am confused…. I am making the large size and after the neck it says I am suppose to have 171 stitches on the pattern. I do have that many but the next row is starting the lace pattern and to do ,or, finish that row you need to have 192 stitches. The pattern repeat has 19 stitches x 9 equals 162 sts. there is another 19 sts. to complete the pattern then add in the 5 sts each side for the band and all that equals 192 sts but I only have 171 sts. That makes it short 21 sts. The next row you need 180 sts, row after that 189 sts.
On one page you say the repeat of design between[ ] is 8 the next page it is 9. Either way it does not work to give me the sts I need to do the lace part of the pattern
I have counted and counted both my stitches and the row count and the row count always comes out to have more stitches. Please help as I really wanted to make this pattern.
Did I mention with the exchange rate I paid over $10.00 for the pattern. I took it to the wool shop and they could not figure it out either……
