You may remember (but probably don’t) when I started a beautiful sweater years ago out of Berroco Ultra Alpaca. The pattern was Oblique by Véronik Avery from Knitty Fall 2007. I had some really cool buttons with an old coin design that I thought would look great since the buttons are so important for this pattern.

Well, I finished the sweater! I love this pattern and think it makes a gorgeous sweater – the only problem for me is that the one I made was way too big! I decided to modify the pattern to be seamless instead of knitted flat, but my main problem is that the alpaca yarn stretched like crazy. The sleeves and body both ended up way too long (especially the sleeves . . .). I thought about ripping back and reknitting some of the sweater, but luckily I have a very tall friend and it just felt better to give it to her instead! Tada – instant Christmas present for Kristen! And it fits her perfectly!

DSC_0324I’m definitely going to have to knit this again for myself (paying particular attention to sizing!) because I love this sweater and want to wear it. The pattern is very well written and really fun because of all of the stitch pattern changes. I also think the style is very flattering!

DSC_0327My modifications mainly consisted of knitting the fronts and back together from the bottom up to the underarms, knitting the sleeves in the round up to the underarms and then joining them and working a traditional raglan yoke. I’ve just realized that I think this sweater was also my first exposure to twisted ribbing – oh what an influence it turned out to be! :)

Knitted Baby Things

Lately, I’ve been working on a few little things for the newest member of my extended family, my second cousin – er, first cousin once removed?  Hmm, not really sure what the classification is, but I do know that he’s a little bitty guy and definitely deserves some itty bitty knitted things to keep him warm!  Enter obsessive, related knitter (me).

First, I knitted him a blanket in bright green Blue Sky Alpacas Dyed Cotton, with an all-over basketweave pattern.

Then, I knitted him a little baby pullover in Malabrigo Sock – in the most gorgeous blue I think I’ve ever seen!  The colorway is called “Impressionist Sky” and that is exactly what it looks like to me.

I love the crispness of the little 2×2 twisted rib on the cuffs, and I chose some little blue gingham buttons from my button jar for the collar.  The buttons are purely for decoration in this case, seeing as I didn’t knit any buttonholes (I’m going to assume this baby boy has a casual-unbuttoned-collar type of personality).  I love this little set because I can’t get enough of the bright green and blue together – last time I knitted baby things a chose more subdued colors (which I still love), but I like the change to bright hues this time.

These little knits are on their way to baby Logan (maybe they arrived today!), and I hope he (and his parents) enjoy them (and that the sweater fits).   : )

I just had to include this picture because of how regal Hugo is looking in the background!  Look at how straight he’s sitting – adorable!

Sabbatical

Hello again!  It’s been forever since I got to share some of my knitting world with you – and that has been for multiple reasons.  1.  Sabbatical took me a long time to knit, and I wasn’t working on much else in the meantime (although, truth be told, I’ve been finished knitting and had Sabbatical blocked for a little while now . . . there were just so many ends to weave in that I procrastinated) 2.  I’ve had a couple of false starts on other knitting projects lately, one because of a bad color choice and one because of a bad gauge choice and 3.  I’ve been overly busy (in my opinion) lately, what with wedding planning and worrying myself to tears (literally sometimes) over things for school.  The knitting stars have just not aligned lately, but I’m starting to feel like the natural order of things is being restored and that I’ll be able to get back to regular updates!

And let’s start back up with a whopper of a finished object – my Sabbatical cardigan, from a lovely pattern by Connie Chang Chinchio in Twist Collective Winter 2009 !  I am in loooooooooove with this sweater and I want to wear it everywhere (even though it’s almost June . . . in Oklahoma . . . ).

I think the color of the yarn (Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool) is so pretty.  I think the fit of the sweater is so flattering (I love the long, flared shape and the slim sleeves).  I think the lace pattern is so gorgeous and the finishing on the collar is just perfect.  And I’m not the only one – Mom happens to think that Sabbatical looks wonderful on her (which it definitely does!) and has already started trying to convince me that I’m ready to take on another one of these for her soon.  : )

Although knitting Sabbatical is definitely a commitment, I would recommend the pattern for almost anyone.  The instructions are clear, and it’s obvious that Connie thought about every single aspect of the sweater during the design process.  I think the little details are what make this sweater look so lovely – I love the little row of purl bumps on the collar.  The only changes I made to the pattern as written were to 1. knit the body in one piece up to the armholes (my standard modification for sweaters like this – I just really, really don’t like seaming) and 2. I discontinued the lace pattern on the edges of the sleeves (i.e. the underside when they’re sewn together).  I simply did this because I had made some mistakes in the lace pattern on the body while doing increases/decreases there and I wanted to save myself the trouble.  I think the sleeves would look lovely with allover lace, but I don’t think having the solid stockinette on the sleeves disrupts the look of the sweater and I will do it that way again when I (one day) make one for Mom.  Ok, senior picture time:

I knitted Sabbatical on size US3 needles even though the Silky Wool calls for 6’s mostly because I know I’m a really loose knitter.  I really like how the lace motif looks in the Silky Wool, and that the small variations in the yarn give it an almost tweedy-look.  And I’ve still got some of the Silky Wool from my Stitches stash left, so I get to knit something else with it!  : )

And because I’ve just learned that you can share your pages from Ravelry with non-members, here’s the link to my Sabbatical project.  Maybe seeing the set up will recruit some hold-outs to join the wonderful world of Ravelry!

As a parting look – here is me and Hugo right before I got a big fat kiss on my cheek!

I would like to introduce you all to the newest member of the baby sweater social elite – Baby Sophisticate.  This sweater is ideal for the baby who enjoys the finer things in life – silver spoons, gourmet mush, and Baby Einstein as a personal tutor.  No silly pockets for this baby; only a sophisticated and luxurious shawl collar. :-)

img_0032

Of course I’m kidding – your baby doesn’t have to be an Upper East-Sider to look adorable in this sweater!  Using Mission Falls 1824 Wool and with a gauge of 15 sts/ 4″, Baby Sophisticate is an extremely quick knit (perfect for last minute baby shower invitations).

img_0036

The design is a top down cardigan, with a picked up all-in-one button band and collar.  This means no seaming – minimal finishing is the only way to go!

I want to give a HUGE thank you to Emmadoodle (aka Emily) for test knitting this design!  She did a wonderful job of helping me find mistakes and just making things all around more clear!  We hope that all the bugs got worked out in this process!

Happy knitting!

One round of Kristen and Emily making adorable baby sweaters for friends, and I just had to join in. This first pattern [in a series of two :-)] I like to call  Bunting.  This name arises from my lack of finesse for pattern naming, but mostly from the fact that I love that the colorway of the yarn is Indigo Bunting.  The prototype has been sent to Baby Cole, and I’m told he looks adorable in it!

img_0030

This is a really simple sweater, knitted from the top down with contrasting color button bands and pockets.  I love pockets on everything, so they are my favorite part of the pattern!  The pockets are very easily done by knitting waste yarn while working the body and then picking up live stitches around the pocket and knitting a little pouch.  I don’t expect many babies to actually  use the pockets on this sweater, but they will look good while not using them!

img_0029

The yarn is Miss Babs Yummy Sock and Sport Weight (which I seem to be using a lot lately).  The main color is Indigo Bunting and the contrasting color is Coventry Green.  I was able to get some lovely light green buttons from Tinker’s Button Shop on Etsy that I think look great against the Coventry Green.

img_0027

Gauge for this pattern is 18 sts/ 24 rows to 4″ in Stockinette stitch on US 5 needles.  This is a pretty simple pattern, however it has not been test knit by other knitters.  It has only been knitted by me, and since I made it up everything made sense to me.  So if you find a mistake (or just something that could be made clearer), please let me know.  I’m pretty quick to respond, so don’t be shy!

ERRATA (03/24/09): Originally, this post called for Miss Babs Yummy Sock and Baby.  Actually, I used Miss Babs Yummy Sock and Sport Weight.  Whoops!  Sorry!  The pattern PDF has been updated as well

UPDATE (04/06/09): I’ve updated the pattern pdf to include more complete instructions for the increases for the yoke as well as correct a mistake for the smaller size that was brought to my attention. The file is much smaller as well! Yay!
