Would you mind helping me with a few rows on this pattern? I’ve been having some difficulty with understanding how to follow the pattern. I’m just about to knit the “W &T” part of the sweater. I don’t understand what it means to knit 18/22 stitches from end and the following row knit 18/22 stitches from end. Are these the same stitches? Are we to knit one side of the collar and front of the sweater one side at a time? Where on the pattern does it say to pick up the stitches on the bottom of the sweater to knit the garter stitch band? Thanks in advance for your help!
Hi! To knit the collar, you pick up stitches all the way around the front opening of the sweater (so, starting at the bottom, around the neck and then down the other side). Then, when you start the short row shaping for the collar (the w&t’s), you will knit the first row until you have 22 stitches remaining on your left hand needle, then you will turn the work around and knit back the other way until you have 22 stitches remaining on that side. when i’m done shaping the shoulders, i have 15, 23, 30, 23, and 15 stitches separated by markers, but the pattern says to place 25 stitches on holders after two of the markers. is this supposed to make the right side wider than the left by 2 stitches?

In this video she is working with stockinette stitch and the collar for baby sophisticate is done in garter stitch. She uses two different ways of wrapping a stitch – depending on whether or not she is on a knit or a purl row. The reason there are two ways depending on the row is to prepare you for the next row you will be working. In other words, the way you wrap the yarn on a purl row is designed to set you up with the yarn at the back of the fabric so you are ready to knit. Since you are only working knit rows in Baby Sophisticate, you should use the wrap&turn method as shown in the video for a purl row on every row, because you always want to have the yarn ready for working a knit row. Can someone help me? I’m new at knitting so I’m not all the time sure what the directions mean. On Baby Sophisticate, row 3 says “* to last stitch, inc1, k1.” Row 5, 9, and 13 say, ” . . . repeat from * to end.” At the end of the knitting row, do we do nothing (no sl1 or inc1)? I’m short stitches and can’t figure out where. Does anyone know what the number of stitches should be between markers?

On rows 3, 7, and 11, you are increasing at the neck edge to create a slight v-neck. On rows 5, 9, and 13, you are not increasing, so you simply knit to the end. If you are having trouble finding where you missed an increase, I would try counting the stitches for each section and comparing them to see if you have the same number – if you don’t, you know where you missed an increase (e.g. count the sts for each sleeve to see if they match – if they are different then you know you missed an increase on the sleeve). I hope this helps! Let me know if you are still having troubles and I’ll try to get stitch counts for each row for you.

Hello! I am a big fan of this sweater and I am trying very hard to get it right. Unfortunately I am stuck on row 3 (HA!) I was hoping you would be so kind as to help me out… I am not new to knitting or crocheting, but I am new to English instructions (I usually always have German ones). In any case this is how I see the instructions: (I am making the smallest size given) sl=slip stitch, K=knit stitch, space=marker placed, v=inc1

I ALWAYS end up with 37 stitches instead of 38 as specified in the instructions.
Also, it says to “K to 1 st before marker”- does this mean to stitch the stitch before the marker, or to leave one stitch on the needle before the marker? In that case it would look like this:

Thanks for your response. I’m really “young” at this. I’ve only knitted a hat and a scarf before so it’s all pretty new. I loved this sweater and thought I would give it a whirl. I found that with my stitching, I had to go with a chunky yarn and size 10 needles to get the gauge I needed for the 6-12 months size. After pulling it apart a couple of times because of stitch counts, I decided to keep track of each row by first counting from the pattern how many stitches should be on each row. Then as I knitted each row I counted inbetween the markers to make sure I was spot on. I wish I would have done that to begin with because now it came out perfect and spent a lot less time then trying to find and fix errors. I’m almost done with the length of the sweater under the arms and am looking forward to making the sleeves and collar. Thanks again for your help.

I have a follow up question to Terri’s on 1/15/10 regarding rows 3, 7, and 11…you say to increase at neck edge. Could you please tell me exactly what I am to do AFTER the LAST marker? Okay so now I’m back to the “not getting it” stage of the pattern. I have been waiting for a friend to help me, but he is busy in grad school and I understand. So I’m reaching out for help and I’m embarrassed to ask, but……….what the heck with the sleeves? I know how to get my stitches onto dpns and begin knitting. But that isn’t it is it? If I just sit and knit it turns out funky….like purling. So what little bit of info am I missing? Will knitting always be so challenging? Frustrated and not wanting to knit only scarves. So, when you say that you know how to put the stitches on dpns and start knitting, are you joining to work in the round? You should be knitting the sleeves as a tube. If you have been able to knit in the round, is it possible that you’ve turned the sleeve inside out, and that’s why it appears that you are purling? I’m just trying to figure out why you wouldn’t be getting stockinette. The collar will be knit straight.
And don’t worry, there’s definitely a learning curve with knitting, but it will eventually all make sense! Let me know if this is absolutely no help, and I’ll keep trying to think of what’s going wrong!

Hi Mercedes! Yes, you do make buttonholes on the collar – they are worked as “K2tog, YO” after you work the short rows for the shawl collar (in the pattern, they are in the “Next Row” after you complete row 7 of the collar 5 times more). Let me know if you have any other questions!

I just finished knitting this for the babe in my tum. It was SOOOO much fun to knit and it turned out wonderfully. My only problem is that I want to knit bigger sizes !! Has anyone tried to map this out for larger sizes? I have a 5 yr old and a 3yr old and they both want one. Any suggestions?
I vow to NOT throw this sweater across the room….yes the same sweater I wrote to you about months ago. I figured out the sleeve thing…yes I was knitting it “inside out”. Now I am down to the “cuff” where you p a row and then k a row for seven rows. I know how to do those stitches. The knitting is fine, but when I purl I end up with a crazy mess…like too many stitches and craziness with the first stitch on each needle…a yarn over perhaps? HELP!!! I so want to finish this adorable thing. The kid is now too big/old for it, but someone else will come along. Thanks for your help and patience.

I am making this and on the sleeves it says to put 23 stitches on the holder then later it says to slip the 25 stitches onto dpns. I am sorta confused can you please help.
Hi! I’m sorry, I think you must have a version of the pattern that wasn’t corrected – you should have 23 sleeve sts, not 25. I’ll check the pdfs that are available from different sources to make sure this mistake gets fixed! Thanks for letting me know!

The pdf is not corrected anywhere I can find it. So it’s only 23 stitches for the sleeves? Also, row 3 is confusing. Do you knit to the second to last stitch and then increase one and knit one after? it says to knit to last stitch and then increase and then knit one which isn’t possible…
Hi! The increase specified in the pattern doesn’t require a stitch to be worked (it’s a backward loop placed on your right needle as seen here: http://www.knittinghelp.com/video/play/make-1-away-continental), so as written you should knit until only one stitch is left and then inc1, k1. If you would like to use an increase that requires a stitch to work, then you should knit until two stitches are left and work your increase. Hope this helps!

Do I start the pattern on a circular needle and just don’t join it? Sorry, I’m confused – I’ve only done pants and hats before and you join them on a circular, so I’m confused as to why I’m using a circular needle…
Hi! Yes, you start the pattern on a circular needle, but don’t join it – I just think the pattern is easier to work on a circular needle because it’s flexible, but you could use a straight needle if you wanted. I think the collar would be especially difficult to work on a straight needle, that’s why I suggest a circular. Hope this helps!

I FINALLY FINISHED THIS SWEATER! I think it took me a year. I mean the knitting has been done for MONTHS, but I was so disgusted with the obvious flaws I have made (ie three button holes….where DID that fourth one go?), slipped stiches, etc. But it is done! Buttons and everything. Now I worry that some poor baby will chew off and choke on said buttons. Thanks for a great pattern. I will try it again………soon-ish. Take care!

Wow, I’m sure my son will love this sweater! He’s turning 1 in a few weeks so I guess if I begin now I can finish just in time for his birthday… I have a question though; he’s a big boy for his age and I was wondering what I’d need to do in order to adjust the pattern for a bigger size. I read about ‘adjusting the gauge’ somewhere, but I don’t know what it means. Using bigger needles? Using different wool? No, right? Could you please help me out? Hey, thanks so much for this pattern! It’s my first real project, I guess (I’ve only done baby booties before this one), and I’m enjoying it more than I can tell, but I still have a lot of trouble visualizing some steps. For example, now I am at the “Split fo body” part, but I can’t really understand if, after I put the sts on holder, I’ll just keep knitting so that the fronts and back will be one single piece. In fact, I think I just got to understand the process while writing this comment (and reading the others, too), but It’s probably better to make sure and don’t do anything stupid, anyway.
I’m having the same problem. Did you ever figure this out about joining after placing stitches on the holder for split body? Any help is much appreciated! I’m on a deadline and wanted to get most of this done today :( I’m not sure of I continue with knit stitch and same yarn as normal.

I love the way this pattern is turning out..but i am stuck on the collar instructions… I am ‘assuming’ that I start to pick up the stitches at the bottom edge of the sweater front…and that it works up the front band and around the collar? after i knit 4 rows..do i continue up the front and around the collar…? i haven’t tried it yet…maybe it will work itself out..but appreciate some direction! It has come a bit small..even though my gauge is correct…but prefer to master it before i rip out ..or keep for a winter newborn!

Hi! Yes, in row 5 you start working short rows to shape the collar – this means that you will be knitting on an increasingly smaller number of stitches centered at the back of the neck. After working the short rows, you will again knit all of the collar stitches on each row. I hope this helps!
Hi Elsie, I’m sorry for taking so long to respond to your comments . . . it’s probably clear that I’m having a little bit of trouble keeping up with the blog right now, but I hope to be back on track soon. In any case, you may have already figured out the buttons, but yes, they are on the side traditionally used for girls sweaters. I typically put them on that side because it’s slightly easier for the person dressing the baby (assuming they are right-handed). If you would like the buttons on the traditional boy side, it’s perfectly fine to have added them in the next row on the other side of the sweater.

Hi again Elsie! I don’t think that Michelle ever posted her modifications for the larger size sweater, sorry. It’s possible to make the pattern larger by using a heavier weight yarn or adding additional yoke increases.

Hmm, you’re not supposed to end up with a hole where you start your w&t’s – are you sure that you wrapped the stitch on the first row you were supposed to? If you missed the first wrap but still turned your work then there would be a hole there . . . but I can’t think of another reason unless you just accidentally turned your work at some point. Do you have a matching hole on the other side? If you’ve already bound off, you could probably just sew up the extra hole with an extra piece of yarn – just catch all the stitches surrounding the hole and weave in the ends of the new piece of yarn. Anyone else have an idea about what the hole might be?
I did ended up with a hole on each side.Are we supposed to wrap the same stitch 4 times,because that is what I did (the 22nd stitch).When I tried to pick them up it was really hard and that is how I got the holes.When I did the wrap I brought the yarn from back to front,slipped the stitch purl wise, and brought the yarn back.Maybe I did the w&t the wrong way?

Hi! So, it sounds as if you are working the w&t correctly (as long as you turned the work after slipping the stitch and bringing the yarn to the back). None of the stitches should be wrapped more than once, though. When is this happening? Just on the 22nd stitch, or on all your w&t’s? Once you have wrapped a stitch, you shouldn’t be knitting up to that stitch again until you are picking up all the wraps.

Could you please verify the NEEDLE size for this sweater for me? The pattern says a Size US 8 – however, the photos appear as thought this was knit on a size 10 or 11 needle with a BULKY yarn.
I want to make this for a NEW Great Nephew (Holden – born July 15th) in the larger, 6-12 months size. Holden has an older cousin named Cole – too!
I plan to make this sweater using Martha Stewart’s Alpaca Blend which has a gauge of: 13 sts x 18 rows = 4” on Size 10 needles.
Please advise.

Hi grandmajeans! Congrats on the new great nephew! I did actually use a size 8 needle in the pattern and a worsted weight yarn, but I’ve since learned that I knit much looser than most people. You’re bulky weight yarn should work well though, since many people have said the pattern comes out small in the specified pattern gauge. Hope this helps!

Love this pattern. Kittting it for my 7 month old. Question about picking up stitches for the collar. You say to start at left front. Does this mean to pick up stitches from the wrong side of fabric? In essence, the left side as the sweater is worn. Or do you mean the left side as the sweater is facing you, which would mean you’d pick up stitches from the fabric’s right side?

HELP, HELP, HELP. Male knitter needs help! This pattern is awesome and the cardigans look amazing but I am a little stuck:
I picked up my slipped stitches but when I looked back at them, they were so baggy and stretched that it looked like a hole for each stitch. After undoing them, I then picked up the stitch over and was really happy with how tight it looked (on both sides actually as the slipped stitches sat nicely underneath). Anyway, does that mean that I now have double the stitches I should have? When we slip, isn’t it one slipped stitched picked up for every 2 rows, or am I doing it wrong?
The reason I ask is, when I knit to 22 from the end before my wrap and turn, 22 from the end is only 2 inches (if that) from the bottom and so my collar increase starts really low. Should I double up to 44 as I doubled my stitches? Is the collar increase supposed to start after part where the buttons will go? My way hasn’t left me room for any buttons! Or am I just not seeing the final picture yet and the increase is supposed to be that low.
Also, I think I got the w&t sorted but according to the video above, you bring the yarn forward, slip the stitch then take the yarn back, pull slipped stitch back but then that leaves you with the yarn at the back, so you have to wrap it again to get it to the front ready for your next row? The video describes her knitting then purling a row and we are knitting each row so I am little confused because she is knitting the same row as we are, but then she is setting up for a purl row.
I really hope you can get back to me as I can’t wait to finish this!!!!!

Hi! I’m glad you like the pattern so far! :) Yes, if you went back and picked up a stitch for every row that you knitted, you will now have double the stitches that you need. One option is to keep the stitches the way you have picked them up and then k2tog all the way across the first row. If you knit all of the stitches you have picked up, it will be too many and the collar will turn into a ruffle; also, when you knit to 22 sts from the end before you w&t you don’t have enough room for buttons, like you said.
Thanks for pointing out that in the video she’s knitting stockinette, not garter stitch. For garter stitch, on each row you should slip the stitch, take the yarn to the front, slip the stitch back, and then turn the work.

Hi! On the sleeves you are knitting in the round, so every round should be knitted to create stockinette stitch. The rest of the sweater is knitted flat, so you have to alternate rows to create stockinette stitch. Hope this helps!

Hi, I am just starting the Cardigan part. I have completed rows 1-13 and have a total of 82 stitches. Directions say to repeat same 3 more times until 106 stiches. If I repeat 2-13 3 more times I will have too many stitches. Do I just add stitches until I reach 106 and then do st st until it measures 3/5″?? I’m confused! Thanks!
Hi! I hope you’re enjoying the cardigan so far! Actually, after you have worked rows 1-13, you should repeat rows 2 and 13 3 times more, not 2 through 13. This is because rows 3, 7 and 11 have 2 extra increases at the neck that you should stop working after row 13. Does that distinction make sense? I hope this helps!

Any plans to rewrite this pattern for toddlers…made the 6-12 month size for my grandson, who is 5 months old. He’ll be able to wear it for a short time. His parents love the sweater.
I would love love love to make this sweater in bigger sizes….I have made 8 or them and have given them as gifts=very happy babies and parents! It is a big bang for the buck. Heck I would like one for ME! I learned a lot by knitting this sweater..it was hard at first and now I can whip it up no problem so this pattern has a certain symbolic meaning for me as well!

Hi Nita, now that you have finished your w&t’s you should have now turned your work after the final wrap. On the next row you will start knitting just as if you were going to continue working short rows, but you will knit past the wraps (you can either pick them up and knit them with the wrapped stitch or leave them there). You continue knitting on this same row until there are only 17(21) stitches left to work before you reach the bottom edge. You will then knit all the way to the bottom edge of the sweater, working the buttonholes as you go. I hope this helps! It will probably make more sense once you get started!
Finally i have finished this little cute sweater :-) It seems not so pretty like yours, but i’m really proud to my self that i have already finished this. It was my first sweater, that i’ve ever knitted ;-)

Cute pattern and am very excited about knitting it. I have a question at the part when you are repeating row 2 and 13 3(4) more times. It says to continue in St st until yoke measures 3.5(4.5)” ending on a WS row. Does this mean 3.5(4.5)” from finishing the 3(4)repeat or from the cast on edge? Thanks for your help.

Hi there, am loving your pattern but seem to have got stuck at a bit where everyone else has succeeded!!! i have finished the ‘repeat row 2 and 13 4 times until 120 sts. it then says to continue in st st until the yoke measures 4 1/2 inches. If i continue in straight st st i will lose the raglan sleeve detail?? How does it work? The picture you have on the pattern looks like the raglan detail carries on until you get to the armpit seam. Am i being stupid??? Please explain, i don’t want to mess it up now!
Hi! Yes, after you finish the increase rows, you will continue in stockinette stitch until you get to the specified yoke length. You are right that this stops making the line of increases that makes that nice raglan detail, but it will only be for a few rows (which will probably end up hidden at the underarm anyway). Buttons? After I completed the body, I picked up the stitches all around – then it says to knit 4 rows. Where, exactly, do the buttonholes go? How do you make them and how far apart are they to be spaced? I have really enjoyed knitting this sweater until now. I like things written out exactly as they are to be done. I don’t like guessing. Hi! For Baby Sophisticate, the buttonholes are worked on this row: “Next row: K to the last 17(21) sts, picking up and knitting the wraps as you go, k2tog, YO, k2(3), k2tog, YO, repeat to last 3(4) sts, k3(4)” of the “Make Collar” section of the pattern. The k2tog, YO is what makes the buttonhole. Hope this helps!
OOOPS. I continued knitting the increases until the top yoke was done. I guess I’ll have to decrease some stitches? Or does it really matter?
Do you mean you continued to knit increases until the yoke was the full 3.5 or 4.5 inches? I don’t think it should make too much of a difference, but how many stitches do you have? If its only a few more than called for, I would just go ahead with it.

Hi! Yes, you should purl across that last row. You will not be binding off any stitches before or while you split for the yoke, you will only be putting some stitches on a stitch holder or waste yarn (these stitches will be worked later and turn into the sleeves). I hope this helps!
Can I use straight needles?
Sure! The body is knitted flat, so that should be no problem for you. For the sleeves, instead of knitting in the round, you will need to knit them flat and then seam them up.

Has anyone knit this pattern with two colors of yarn? One for the body and another for all the garter stitch areas? I have a beautiful variegated yarn and then a matching one in a solid color. I can’t decide which one to use for the body and which for the collar, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!

OK, I started this sweater almost a year ago. I sustained an injury and was unable to knit. Finally I am able to again and want to finish this sweater. I am on the collar. but I don’t recall which stitches I need to pick up. Can you help??

When you start the collar, you pick up approximately 1 stitch for every 2 rows, starting at the lower left edge (as you are looking at the sweater), and working your way around the side of the sweater, the cast on stitches, and then the opposite side of the sweater. Can you guide me on how to alter the pattern for using straight needles? (Would you give any extra/different instructions or advice to compete the project?) Hi! The only thing you would have to change to knit the sweater on straight needles is the sleeves – you would have to knit them flat instead of in the round and then seam them up. Otherwise everything else should be the same! Good luck!

Hi! I typically just add another ball of yarn and leave a bit of a tail, which I weave in later after the sweater is finished. Hope this helps!

can I use size 9 needles since the size runs small?
You can use larger needles and larger yarn to get a bigger sweater if you like. But I don’t think that larger needles with the same size yarn would work, because the fabric would be too loose. Hope this helps!
I have finally finished the sweater and it looks. fine, but needs to be blocked. The yarn I used is a blend of 75% acrylic and 25%wool. What method would you suggest for. blocking?
Hi! I would suggest wet blocking the sweater (soaking the sweater in warm water and wool wash for about 30 min and then pinning it out). Good luck!
When putting the sleeves on waste yarn, how do I CO six stitches to a pattern I’m already knitting? Do I use a new ball of yarn? Is there a particular type of cast-on I use to make this work?
Hi! When you are casting on six stitches at the underarm you will use the yarn that you have already been knitting with. I usually cast on with a series of firm backward loops (like the increases used in the yoke) to make up the stitches. I hope that makes sense! Happy knitting!

I am at the point where I need to create the split for body. I have CO 6 stitches but to “join Yarn to back”, do I continue knitting with the same yarn or do I need to “join” a new ball. I am not sure if I am just skipping the stitches that are on the place holder and continuing on with the same yarn. If I am just using the same yarn and continuing, how do I join? Just continue with knit stitch as normal? Thanks!

I need help here to please. At the Split for Body I have knitted to first m and placed next 23 stitches on holder. Pattern says join yarn to back, then k to next marker. Do I join a new ball of wool when joining yarn to back or carry on with same wool knitting behind stitches on holder?
Nearing the end of this project and see how a previous question is similar to mine. If I continue after finishing the w&t rows I have a large hole on each side of the lower part of the collar. I wrapped and turned just as the instructions stated 13 times. Instructions did not say to w&t in a different stitch each time. I think the novice knitter or someone like myself who has never done the w&t is less than clear. I just watched the video and will rip shortly. My question: 1.,after the 2 set up rows do I do a total of 14 shaping rows and 2. the row that follows that do I knit all stitches in the needle? This last part is not clear and I paid for this pattern.
Hi! I’m sorry that you found the w&t instructions confusing. To your questions: 1) I’m not sure what size you are working, but for all of the Baby Sophisticate sizes, where it says “Work shaping row 9 (9, 11, 11, 13) times more,” that means you will be working the shaping row a total of 10 (10, 12, 12, 14) times and 2) in the following row, labelled “Next row” you will knit all of the stitches on your needle. In my patterns, and many others, “knit across” means to knit all stitches. Hope this helps!
Thank you this is a big help. I am doing the 24 month size for my grandson and will make another in size 4 for his older brother. But not before i write myself some notes related to the pattern. I can say I found the pattern easy to follow up to this point. I was easily able to switch sides for the button holes

I’ve made this sweater four times now….so NOT like the typical baby sweater. The last one I made was a huge hit with Mom AND Dad. It’s my “go-to” sweater for little boys, but the one made up in a pale lavender and pink was perfect for a little girl.

Hi! You should continue the yoke until you finish all increases. For me it measured 3.5 inches at that point. It is not 3.5 inches from the end of the increases. I hope that helps!

You should definitely be able to adjust the pattern for a four year old, you just need to figure out what chest measurement you want and increase to the number of stitches you need based on your gauge (you will also have to cast on more stitches). Hi! I’m sorry, but I don’t remember exactly how many stitches I picked up when knitting the sweater. It will depend on your row gauge (meaning that it depends on how many rows you worked for the body). You should be picking up one stitch for each slipped stitch on the edge of the sweater and one stitch for each cast on stitch at the back of the neck. Hope this helps!
I love the sweater but I have having difficulty with the collar. I can wrap and turn ok but when I am done with all the wraps and turns and do the picking up and knitting the wraps, my collar doesn’t look so good. I looked at the video but it didn’t help. Would you please explain how to pick up the wraps. Thank you very much.
Hi! When picking up the wraps, I usually just lift it with my right needle and place it on the left needle, then knit the stitch and the wrap together. However, if you are not liking how it looks, you could simply not pick up the wraps. I personally prefer to pick up the wraps, but many knitters do not pick them up when working garter stitch because the wraps blends in with the garter bumps. I hope this helps!

Thank you for writing such a lovely pattern, and giving it to us for free (true Oklahoma generosity, I must say :))! This is the first sweater I’ve ever knit, and I’m having a great deal of trouble figuring out the sleeves.
The pattern says “Place 26 sts from holder onto dpns and K all sts for 6″…” easy enough, right? Apparently not for me. I transferred them to DPNS, but can’t figure out how to join in the round with a new ball of yarn, and close the bit of gaping I have in the under arm. Was I supposed to CO any extra sts and pick them up later?
All of the raglan sleeve tutorials I’ve watched show sts being picked up. I’m terribly confused.

Hi! Thanks for your nice comments about the pattern. :) I’m sure you are doing the sleeve just perfectly – there will be a small hole at the underarm that you can sew up at the end with the tail from joining your new ball of yarn. If you don’t want to do that, you can pick up a couple of stitches from the underarm, but I’ve found that a lot of times when I do that there is still a little hole that I have to sew up! I am really new to knitting and I am still learning. I just had my son and was trying to knit this lovely sweater ( Thank you so much for the pattern) After ripping 4 or 5 times I am at the split for body. As I am new I am little lost. Right now I am at 17/26/34/17/26 (120 st) 4 inch part. Am I knitting the first 17 then placing 26 on holder, continue knitting the 34 sets, place 26 on holder and continue knitting the 17 as one continuous line without breaking the year till I reach the mentioned height?

Hi Muthu! – It sounds like you’ve got it right! :) You should be knitting one continuous row, just removing the stitches for the sleeves to a holder so that you can knit them after you are finished with the body. Hope this helps!

Hi Eryn! Yes, knitting to 22 stitches from the end means to knit all the way around until 22 stitches remain on your left hand needle. The buttonholes will come in after you’ve worked the short rows for the collar, they are the “K2tog, YO” parts in the collar section. Hope this helps! Happy knitting!

Hi Linden; I’m working on the w & t at the neckline of the sweater. Your directions are not quite right for garter stitch wrap and turn. I had to look up a you tube to get it right. I had too many wraps :) the directions say – bring yarn to front, slip next stitch etc. I believe you can leave out the (bring yarn to front, because in garter stitch my yarn is already in front and I found that to be confusing as I tried to wrap it). How easy it is to wrap in garter stitch as you just slip the next stitch move the yarn to the other side and turn…it’s all done for you. I’m taking it out for the third time now to do the simple wrap. Anyway if you could try that direction for me and see if it is correct or not. Thanks, Sue P.S. Such a beautiful sweater pattern, I did the 6 month size in a soft yarn with two shades: light brown and dark cream. The garter stitch cuffs, collar and sleeves knit from the neckline are the darker brown color with the main body the cream. Very distinguished! :) .

I’m sorry, this might sound like an odd question, but I’m new to knitting and I have been trying to figure out (and am not sure I know how to search it online)… I want to know how to create the pattern at the armpit/where the sleeve connects… is this just bound off and then two pieces stitched together or is it some leaning stitches? Hopefully you’ll know what I mean!
The sweater is knit from the top down
The “pattern” you see is the raglan sleeve increases. If you read the pattern the sweater is knit till a certain point then the sleeve stitches are placed on scrap yarn or stitch holders, and the rest if the body is knit. Then you knit the sleeves on double points or a circular needle using magic loop. There are tutorials on you tube for many of the stitches and techniques you may not be familiar as a beginner. There are short rows on the collar. While this is a pretty simple pattern, it is a little more difficult due to the collar. Hope this helps

A few questions: 1) the yarn you use is no longer available. Is there a mainstream yarn that would work (something that I could buy at Joann’s?) 2) with extra yarn, could this be done in a herringbone stitch? 3) is there an easy way to increase the size on this? I would like to make matching ones for my boys but my oldest is size 5t or kids small now…
I just started knitting, and can basically do purl and knit stitches. I fell in love with this pattern and would love to make it for my grandchild. Sadly, I’m having difficulty following the pattern. Would you have a video I can follow with?

Any chance of a “child sophisticate” pattern coming out? My girl is too big for baby sophisticate and WAY too small for the adult, but I LOVE this sweater!
